Google Search Console’s generative AI performance reports are now available worldwide, giving businesses greater insight into their visibility across Google’s AI-powered search features.
The report gives businesses greater visibility into whether their website pages are appearing within Google’s AI-powered search experiences, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.
For businesses trying to understand how search behaviour is changing, this is a useful development. Until now, measuring visibility within AI-generated search results has been difficult.
However, the presence of another report does not mean businesses need another collection of numbers to monitor without context.
The important question is:
What can this information tell you about how potential customers are discovering your business?
What Is the Generative AI Performance Report?
Google’s generative AI performance report shows how often links to a website have appeared within supported AI features in Google Search.
The report currently includes impressions from:
- AI Overviews
- AI Mode
Google provides a separate generative AI performance report for Discover.
Website owners can examine their AI search impressions according to:
- Page
- Country
- Date
- Device
This means a business may be able to identify which pages Google is presenting within AI-generated search experiences and where those impressions are coming from.
Google announced that these insights had been rolled out worldwide as of 31 August 2026.
However, not every website will see the report immediately. A property may not have access if the rollout has not reached it yet or if the website has not received enough impressions within Google’s generative AI features.
What Does an Impression Mean?
An impression is recorded when a link to your website is shown to someone within a supported generative AI search feature.
This provides evidence that Google considers the page relevant to a particular search journey.
It does not necessarily mean that the person:
- Clicked the link
- Visited the website
- Read the page
- Contacted the business
- Became a customer
This distinction matters.
AI visibility can create valuable opportunities, but visibility should not be treated as the final objective. The wider customer journey still needs to lead from discovery to relevance, trust and action.
Why This Development Matters for SMEs
Most SMEs have historically measured search performance through rankings, clicks and website traffic.
AI-generated search experiences are changing that journey.
A potential customer may now receive a summarised answer directly within Google. The answer may mention several businesses, provide supporting links or help the customer refine their question before visiting a website.
The new report provides businesses with a clearer indication of whether their content is participating in that experience.
It can help answer questions such as:
- Are any of our pages appearing in Google’s AI features?
- Which pages receive the most AI search impressions?
- Are service pages appearing, or only general blog content?
- Is visibility concentrated in particular countries?
- Are impressions increasing or declining over time?
- Does AI visibility contribute to meaningful website activity?
This creates a useful starting point for reviewing how clearly Google understands the business and its content.
What the Report Does Not Tell You
The report should be interpreted carefully.
It shows impressions, but impressions alone do not explain the commercial value of that visibility.
A page could receive many AI impressions without producing enquiries. Another page could receive fewer impressions but attract highly relevant visitors who are ready to take action.
Businesses should therefore avoid using AI impressions as an isolated success metric.
Search Console data should be considered alongside information such as:
- Organic website visits
- Engagement with important pages
- Completed contact forms
- Telephone enquiries
- Appointment bookings
- Downloads or registrations
- The quality of enquiries generated
The objective is not simply to appear more frequently. It is to become visible in the right situations and provide a clear path towards the next step.
How to Use the New Report
If the generative AI report is available within your Search Console property, begin by identifying the pages receiving the most impressions.
Then review those pages carefully.
1. Examine Why the Page May Be Appearing
Consider the questions the page answers and the subject areas it covers.
Is the information clear, focused and genuinely useful? Does the page demonstrate relevant expertise? Does it provide evidence that supports its main claims?
Understanding why one page is appearing may help you strengthen other important pages.
2. Check Whether the Information Is Current
AI-generated results depend on the information available online.
Review important details such as:
- Services
- Locations
- Professional credentials
- Statistics
- Staff information
- Opening hours
- Contact details
- References and supporting sources
Outdated or inconsistent information can weaken both customer trust and search visibility.
3. Strengthen Related Pages
If one page is receiving AI impressions, examine whether it links naturally to relevant service pages, case studies, FAQs or contact information.
A useful article may create discovery, but the surrounding website must help the visitor understand what the business provides and what to do next.
4. Compare Visibility With Enquiries
Use website analytics and enquiry tracking to understand what happens after someone reaches the website.
Look beyond impressions and ask:
- Are visitors reaching the relevant service pages?
- Are they staying long enough to understand the information?
- Can they find evidence of the business’s experience?
- Is there a clear next step?
- Are enquiries being recorded accurately?
This connects AI visibility with actual business outcomes.
Do Businesses Need Special AI Content?
Google states that there are no additional technical requirements for appearing as a supporting link within AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Pages must be indexed, eligible to appear in Google Search and capable of displaying a search snippet.
Google also recommends continuing to follow established SEO practices, including:
- Publishing helpful and reliable content
- Making important information available as text
- Using clear internal links
- Maintaining a good page experience
- Keeping Business Profile information current
- Ensuring structured data matches visible page content
- Allowing Google to crawl important pages
Businesses do not need to create special markdown versions, AI text files or dedicated schema solely to become eligible for these features.
The fundamentals still matter.
Do Not Chase the Report Without a Strategy
New reports and search features can create pressure to react immediately.
Before changing your content strategy, ask:
- Does this development change how our customers search?
- Does it affect how our business is presented?
- Can it help us improve the journey from visibility to enquiry?
If the new data helps you understand which content Google associates with your expertise, it deserves attention.
If it simply produces another number without helping you make better decisions, it should not become the centre of your marketing strategy.
Visibility Is Only the Beginning
The new Search Console report is an important step towards making AI search visibility more measurable.
It can show whether your pages are appearing and help identify the content Google considers relevant. It cannot tell you whether your complete digital presence is clear, credible and capable of converting attention into enquiries.
That requires a broader review of your website, content, reputation signals, business information and customer journey.
Being visible is valuable.
Being visible to the right people, for the right reasons, with a clear next step is what creates business value.
